Consultant Cellular Pathology at Royal Devon University Healthcare

Our Department of Cellular Pathology, based within the Devon Trust, is proudly UKAS (ISO15189) accredited. We actively participate in recognized external quality assurance (EQA) schemes for histopathology and cytopathology, ensuring the highest standards in diagnostics and reporting.
Annual Workload
Histopathology Requests: 12,500 per year
Non-Gynaecological Cytology Requests: 800 per year
The department handles an extensive range of biopsy and resection specimens, reflecting the demands of a small district general hospital (DGH). Notably, approximately 10% of histopathology requests originate from primary care doctors.
Reporting and Specialization
Our consultant pathologists utilize a flexible generalist reporting system, allowing them to focus on their subspecialist interests while maintaining a broad expertise. Work distribution follows a hybrid pull-push system:
Specialist/Urgent Work: Pushed to designated consultants
Non-Urgent Work: Pulled by consultants during reporting sessions.
Multidisciplinary Meetings (MDMs)
Regular MDMs are held for a variety of subspecialties, including:
Breast, Gynaecology, Urology, Gastrointestinal, Dermatopathology (including inflammatory skin), and Lung
Meetings take place in the purpose-equipped MDT room at the Medical Education Centre or virtually via MS Teams.

The department is staffed by skilled biomedical scientists with expertise in:
Routine diagnostics
Immunohistochemistry
Immunofluorescence
Our modern laboratory space has been extensively refurbished and features advanced equipment, including a fluorescence microscope for inflammatory skin cases.

The successful candidate will complement the expertise of 17 Gastroenterology Consultants, 5 SpRs, 5 trainees and 25 Clinical Nurse Specialists working across the Gastroenterology Department. The department has an interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Hepatology, Nutrition, Capsule Endoscopy and Functional Disease. They offer JAG accredited services across both sites which are fully equipped offering advanced GI endoscopic techniques

About the role:
Provide assessments including relevant psychiatric & physical investigations of a wide range of substance misusers presenting to the service.

Initiate appropriate prescribing regimes to clients in line with national legislation/guidance and provide specialist prescribing assessments to opiate, stimulant, tranquilizer, barbiturate, alcohol dependent clients
Conduct phlebotomy tests if required and support nursing team in ensuring that the maximum number of service users are tested for BBVs and vaccinated against Hepatitis A and B
You will need:
GMC Registration with a license to practice
Experience in delivering evidence-based treatments in Substance Misuse Patients
Good knowledge of addictions psychiatry and legislation relating to mental health
Knowledge of the issues facing substance misusers including appropriate medical interventions, social care and health issues

We are looking for a colleague to join a team of 8 paediatric oncology/haematology consultants. The successful applicant will be involved in the care of children with all types of malignancy, but with primary responsibility for patients with solid tumours and leukaemia as well as those on early phase clinical trials. They will work closely with a strong multi-disciplinary team to provide specialist care for children with cancer across the region, including support from the 11 paediatric oncology shared care units across the region. They will be enthusiastic, highly motivated and help develop our paediatric oncology daycare and ambulatory service.
The post-holder will fully participate in the provision of a tertiary paediatric oncology service, including:
• Responsibility for the care of paediatric patients with a full range of malignant diagnoses, with primary responsibility for patients with solid and haematological malignancies
• Weekly solid tumour and leukaemia clinics
• Approximately 1 in 10 out of hours cover, to include both paediatric oncology and malignant haematology patients
• To help develop paediatric oncology day ward and ambulatory services
• To help run Paediatric ECMC early phase trials
• Liaison with other hospitals in the region to provide specialist advice and to ensure children receive timely and appropriate treatment
• In addition, the post holder is expected to engage with the Divisional and Hospital managerial teams to develop the service on an as and when basis
